Beginnings
My acquaintance with Ms.Lu began with the need to design her residence in the Nanshan hills of Chongqing.Although she primarily resides in Shanghai, her original intent for renovating this old house was to create a haven for her aging father ーa space truly suited for his comfort and twilight years. It was through these in-depth conversations ーand a stroke of serendipityーthat two properties in Dashiba entered the Lu family's vision.

And so, our exploration of age-friendly design took on new meaning, unfolding into a deeper meditation on how spaces can grow gently alongside those who live in them.

适老 Design for aging
Homes designed for the elderly have become an increasingly prominent topic in recent years. With the accelerating trend of population aging, the market has seen a growing number of products aimed at senior living—from adaptive equipment to specialized care facilities.

However, many of these solutions are evaluated primarily through material criteria: the quality of the natural environment, supporting infrastructure, floor area, and so on. But can true age-friendly living be achieved by addressing only physical needs? What should come before these material considerations? These are questions worth pondering deeply.

置业 A Home, Chosen
Thus, a question stood before us. Should we proceed with the renovation of the old Nanshan house, or acquire a new property to better support Mr. Lu’s aging-in-place journey? Carrying all these reflections with us, and after many thoughtful conversations and site visits with Ms. Lu, we eventually chose the latter—to purchase a new property and design, from the ground up, a living space tailored to his later year. But the essence of this decision went far beyond the property’s physical attributes. What truly mattered was something deeper.

Mr. Lu had spent most of his life living and working in Dashiba. His old friends, longtime colleagues, and a lifetime of memories are deeply rooted in this community. Compared to that, so-called advantages like “natural scenery,” “fresh air,” or even the square footage of a home, felt secondary—almost trivial.

We came to a shared understanding: at the heart of age-friendly living is companionship, grounded in real, everyday life. And we firmly believe this is where Mr. Lu’s joy truly lies. After all, a vibrant spirit is the best safeguard for a healthy body.

回家 Coming Home
At the same time, another core demand has presented itself before us. Beyond meeting the elderly gentleman's needs for an age-friendly life, this place must also become where Sister Lu wants to return. And this place is home.

It is a place worthy of nostalgia and anticipation, a vessel for preserving all beautiful memories. Thus, these scenes and these recollections came into being.

It brings us great joy that Grandpa can be the main character in his own home, and that Sister Lu now has a place she truly wishes to return to—a home in Chongqing in every meaningful sense.
